Why Play?
In today’s fast paced world, where moving
forward is the prime goal of every individual, it may leave others wondering
why should playing be considered as a priority. To most adults, playtime is a
rowdy activity that is simply a waste of time for children. It is seen as an
unessential time consuming act that has no sense of organization whatsoever.
Therefore in many communities, play spaces is hardly given an ounce of
attention and is seen as an unnecessary luxury especially for this digital age.
Majority of adults fail to understand that the
act of playing is an important aspect in a child’s mental, expressive and most
importantly physical development. Amidst the unruly seemingly catastrophic
humdrum of kids playing in a playground are several of learning venues where
children can learn various conflict management, problem solving, and
independent thinking skills. These are things which cannot be taught in the
comforts of household or academic walls.
In conclusion, play is an integral part of
child’s development towards becomes a better adult. The children of today are
the foundation of what tomorrow will be, therefore providing proper venues
where proper fostering of various interpersonal skills should be provided.
Reality
of play in the Philippines
A survey was conducted by, play Universal Co.,
a non-government organization which promotes play, where they found out that
only sixteen percent (16%) of the schools in the Philippines have playgrounds.
Also, only four percent (4%) of urban
communities have provisions for playgrounds. In addition, only a small percent,
children belonging in the middle and upper class of society, have access to
these facilities.
Through similar studies conducted, it was found
that when children are left alone, an entire series of critical learning is
missed because of the absence of adults who supply the answers. This case is
much more common in developing countries with limited man-power qualifications
and a lack of facility provision.
The culture of sedimentary play is hastily
becoming a norm – an unhealthy
practice which leaves the future of nations at an imbalance. This is a global
phenomenon which should be addressed and given focus on a severe level.
